The Essence: Smelter mountain trail offers only spectacular views of Durango. The trail is rocky, fun, and easy but relatively steep. Under a mile and with several overlook points, Smelter Mountain trail is a rewarding little hike. The best times to hike this trail are between May and November.
Getting there: The trailhead is located on the westside of 550/160 just south of Santa Rita park. Head south on Camino del Rio (550/160) and merge right onto frontage road. From here make the first right turn onto CR 210 then another immediate right onto Smelter Place. Park and the trailhead is located on the west side of the lot.
The Route: The route from the parking lot runs along the side of the mountain and is relatively easy to follow.
Comments: Often you will find others trail running, bird watching, or snowshoeing in the winter so be mindful! Lastly, Smelter Mountain gets its name from the 'smelting' that took place on the mountain back in the late 1800's early 1900's. Smelting is the process of separating metals from ore (rock).
