To ensure that Southwest Colorado's outdoor enthusiasts are ready for tomorrow's adventure by providing premier outfitter gear.

The story of gardenswartz

The Gardenswartz name has deep roots in Southwest Colorado and outdoor sporting goods. The story begins when Aaron Gardenswartz and his two brothers emigrated from Poland in the 1890's. Aaron was a father and cattleman who conducted business between Bayfield and the Denver area. Aaron's son, Morris, followed in his fathers footsteps and eventually married the eldest daughter of the Cook family. The Cook family, fortunately, had the sporting goods connections in Denver.

Later Morris had three sons named Sam, Harold, and Lester. After graduating high school, Lester and Sam opened the doors to Gardenswartz Sporting Goods on Main Avenue in 1928 where it still operates today!

The Gardenswartz Sporting Goods location was family-owned until 1979. After several owners, Richard Ellis purchased the store in 1988 and has since, kept the vibrant atmosphere of specializing in hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping the same as when the store first opened!

For 89 years, the Gardenswartz name has been the premier supplier of sporting goods to outdoor enthusiast's in the Four Corners region! The tradition's of Sam and Lester Gardenswartz still continue today and are represented by maintaining the oldest outdoor outfitter in Durango, Colorado.
